Heat pumps are an environmentally friendly low carbon heating system that is much more efficient than a conventional boiler. Rather than burning a fuel like gas or oil, it uses electricity with a refrigerant to transfer heat from outside to heat your rooms and hot water. Heat pumps offer a long term low cost solution that are suitable for most domestic, commercial and industrial installations by extracting heat from the outside air, even if the temperature is as low as -25. To help offset the initial installation investment cost, the Government often issues grants to reduce the upfront costs. Heat pumps are available in various formats to suit individual needs. Air source heat pumps are the most common type of domestic heat pump and are suitable for many types of home.

It involves installing an Air Source Heat Pump (ASHP) similar to an air conditioning cabinet outside your property that connects to your heating system. If you have a garden or large outdoor space, Ground Source Heat Pumps are an alternative option that takes thermal heat from beneath the ground and connects to your heating system. If you don’t have radiators or underfloor heating, and can’t or don’t want to install these, you can consider Air-to-Air Heat Pumps. Air-to-Air systems are more commonly associated with smaller properties such as flats and park homes. The running costs of heat pumps depend on a number of factors to do with your heating system and your property.

COMPARISONS

We refer to a COP rating to determine the energy efficiency of the various Eco-Heating solutions. The Co-efficient of Performance (COP) is a measure to assess the ratio between heating generated and the power consumed. Where an  air-source heat pump has a COP of 3.6, it means that it transfers heat energy 3.6 times more than the energy consumed. UK Government has announced its intention to outlaw the sale of Gas Boilers from 2025.
