Glais House is a well-established residential care home in the heart of the Swansea Valley, providing essential care and support to elderly and vulnerable residents. With energy use consistently high due to heating, lighting, and specialist equipment running around the clock, Owner-Manager Ken Thilagenathan wanted to take a proactive approach to lowering operational costs and reducing the home’s environmental footprint.
Ken was particularly conscious of future energy price rises and wanted to ensure long-term sustainability for the care home and its residents.
Sector: Residential Care Home
Products Installed:
100 x JA Solar 385W All Black Panels
3 x SOLIS 15kW 3-Phase Inverters
4 x PureDrive 5kWh Hybrid DC Batteries
4 x EM-Lite Generation Meters
Schletter Rapid2+ Mounting System
System Size: 38.5kWp
Installer: Celtic Green Energy
Following an in-depth consultation and site survey, Celtic Green Energy designed a tailored 38.5kWp solar PV system with 20kWh of PureDrive battery storage, perfectly suited to the care home’s energy profile.
The system includes:
100 high-efficiency JA Solar all-black panels for maximum aesthetics and performance
3 SOLIS 15kW 3-phase inverters to handle peak demand across the facility
4 PureDrive batteries to store surplus energy for evening and backup use
A smart monitoring system, enabling Ken and his team to track performance in real time
The installation was completed with zero disruption to residents or staff and was fully MCS-certified.
Since the installation, Glais House has seen significant benefits:
Metric | Value |
---|---|
Annual Energy Generated | Approx. 34,000 kWh |
Yearly Electricity Savings | Over £7,500 |
Carbon Reduction (Annual) | Over 7.5 tonnes CO₂ |
Projected 4-Year Savings | Approx. £30,000 |
Payback Period | Just over 7 years |
Lifetime Financial Benefit | Estimated £175,000+ |
The solar PV system now powers a significant portion of the care home’s daily energy needs, while the solis battery system helps
cover peak evening use and reduces export loss.
“We’re always looking for ways to improve the care environment for our residents while being responsible with our costs. Celtic Green Energy were brilliant from the very first meeting – professional, knowledgeable, and sensitive to the needs of our home. The installation went smoothly, and the savings we’re seeing already make this one of the best decisions we’ve made..”
