Domestic Biomass Example

Domestic RHI is paid out over 7 years
House 4/5 Bedroom approx. 500m²

30kW Pellet Biomass Boiler fitted - £18,000 installed

Existing Boiler Fuel Cost Wood Pellets Fuel Saving RHI Payment PROFIT
Mains Gas £17,057 £16,027 £1,030 £33,166 £16,195
Oil £20,515 £16,027 £4,487 £33,166 £19,653
LPG £23,460 £16,027 £7,432 £33,166 £22,598
Electric £54,583 £16,027 £38,555 £33,166 £53,721
*figures calculated based on the RHI tariff (10.98p)as of 15th January 2015

The domestic RHI tariff came in half way through 2014 and has proven very popular particuarly in Scotland. Due to the popularity the Government have reduced the tariff for new applicants, something they will no doubt do again soon, to get locked in for 7 years at the current rate you will need to take action sooner rather than later.
Also the figures here in this example will be different for your home based on how much you are paying for your heating.

Commercial Biomass Example

Commercial RHI is paid out over 20 years
Local School or business premises

150kW Pellet Biomass Boiler fitted - £90,000 installed

Existing Boiler Fuel Cost Wood Pellets Fuel Saving RHI Payment PROFIT
Mains Gas £404,011 £281,020 £122,990 £360,138 £483,129
Oil £485,910 £281,0207 £204,890 £360,138 £565,028
LPG £555,659 £281,020 £274,639 £360,138 £634,777
Electric £1,292,834 £281,020 £1,011,814 £360,138 £1,371,952
*figures calculated based on the RHI tariff (6.8p)as of 1st January 2015

Commercial RHI is paid out on a lower tariff rate than domestic, however as it is paid out over 20 years coupled with the fact that commercial premises use far more energy, the commercial biomass incentive is a very lucrative opportunity that will no doubt not be available for new applicants for many more years to come.
